The history of kiddie matinees goes back as far as the 1910s. But kiddie matinees didn’t really take off as a phenomenon until the late-1920s, early-1930s during the Great Depression. Built in 1927, the Coronado Theatre and thousands of other movie palaces of the 20s and 30s became a place where kids escaped the troubles of the times in a magical place.
Kiddie matinees remained popular through the 1960s, even as movie theaters competed with television for kids’ attention. Like the rest of the country, kiddie matinee movies at the Coronado Theatre created lasting fond childhood memories.
The August 26th KID CINEMA SATURDAY – Bringing special memories for a new generation of children.
“I used to take a bus (3 East State) every Saturday to the Coronado. My ticket was $.25, there was an organ and player before the show started. Afterward I went to either Hickey’s (or Johnson’s, depending on the year) for fries and a coke.
My graduating class of East High was the last class to graduate at the Coronado. So many memories there.
Wonderful to see Saturday movies for kids.” Rockford Native, Lori Burke

“Turning Red”
All ages will enjoy this timeless tale! The young actress Rosalie Chiang lends her voice to Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS). Sandra Oh voices Mei Lee’s protective mother, Ming, who is never far from her daughter.
