Jefferson-Horton Post 340 is a historic American Legion Post located on South Main Street in Rockford’s Heritage District. Chartered in 1939 during an era when segregation limited opportunities for Black veterans, Jefferson-Horton became a place where veterans could gather, serve, and build community. More than 85 years later, our doors are open to all veterans and to a community that continues to help shape our story.
Today, Post 340 is working to reimagine what a historic veterans organization can be for the next generation. While our building has not yet undergone its planned physical transformation, the reimagining is already happening through people, programming, partnerships, arts, culture, and new uses of our space.
Hosting ArtScene is part of that journey. It allows us to open our doors to people who may have never stepped inside an American Legion Post and create connections between veterans, artists, neighbors, and the broader Rockford community.
Visitors will experience a building that carries generations of history while also becoming a space for new ideas and experiences. Through collaborations like ArtScene, Jefferson-Horton Post 340 seeks to honor the veterans who built this institution while demonstrating that their legacy can inspire something new—a welcoming community space where service, history, creativity, culture, and fellowship come together.
