Artist Profile

Rhonda Gates

Abstract, geometric landscape painter, working in acrylic and oil paint with graphite

Rhonda Gates creates paintings inspired by memories spent in the landscape, then simplified into intimate abstractions.

Gates’s paintings are luminous and subtly colored, composed of nuanced gradations, sensuous applications of paint and fleeting effects of light within a geometric framework. They offer intimate glimpses into the poetry of air and light that blend into tangible material — conceptual abstractions, contributing to the genre of contemporary landscape painting.

Gates exhibits her paintings throughout the U.S. They have been the subject of reviews in Art in America, Artnet and the Chicago Tribune, described as offering surfaces that are “luscious and juicy,” radiating “a powerful inner light” that beckons the viewer closer.

In the presence of immense and raw power (relentless, churning and eroding waves battering coastal cliffs / the uplifting, sublimating and folding forces of colliding continents / millennia of time and life encased in infinitely different colored layers of compressed sediment in different locations both here and abroad) a flood of inspirations washes over me. Scenes from new landscapes evolve into a collection of memories that I will revisit, distill and simplify over time. Effectively, they become abstracted and transformed into paintings: land(e)scapes.
